Durham Firefighter Dies in Line of Duty While Searching Building; Two Others Injured
DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Fire Department is mourning the loss of a firefighter who died in the line of duty Friday morning while searching for victims inside a building at 410 Marly Drive.
Firefighter Andrew Brokes died while carrying out search operations inside the building, according to the department.
Brokes joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, and served the community with dedication and courage.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II.
The chief said the department is supporting Brokes’ family and asked the public to respect their privacy as they navigate the loss.
Two additional firefighters were injured during the incident and transported to Duke Medical Center. Both have received medical care and are expected to make full recoveries.
The department said the loss is being felt throughout its ranks, noting that Brokes embodied the commitment firefighters make when they put themselves in danger to serve others.
Officials said additional information about honoring Brokes’ service and supporting the firefighters involved will be shared in the coming days.
