— Firefighters battling a residential structure fire in Bedford had an unexpected rescue on their hands when crews discovered a very large, unconscious dog inside the burning home.

The Bedford Fire Department was dispatched to the 500 block of Westview Avenue for a reported house fire. Chief 1 arrived first and found a single-story wood-frame residence with smoke showing from the Charlie side of the structure. The incident was upgraded to a working fire.

Wagon 1, staffed by five firefighters, took on fire attack while Ladder 1, also staffed by five, conducted primary and secondary searches and handled ventilation.

During the fire attack, Wagon 1’s crew located a large, unconscious dog inside the residence. With help from Ladder 1’s crew, firefighters quickly removed the animal and turned it over to EMS outside.

The good news? The dog was revived at the scene and transported to a nearby emergency veterinarian for further evaluation.

Engine 1 assisted with water supply and ventilation. Forest Fire Department crews later relieved Wagon 1 during overhaul operations, while Tower 5 established a rapid intervention team outside the residence.
