A dietary supplement for babies advertised to help with better sleep has been recalled after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said testing identified three different types of alcohol that were not declared on the product's label.
Pacific Health Sciences voluntarily recalled one lot of Babies' Magic Tea brand Baby Sleep Gripe Water, sold in 4-ounce amber-colored bottles inside a blue cardboard box with an oral syringe. The recall affects Lot 25122bw, which has a best-before date of December 2028. Officials said the product was distributed to Secrets of Tea to then be sold on its website and on Amazon.
The FDA said testing found the recalled product contained approximately 8.3% ethanol, 0.35% methanol and 0.48% isopropanol, none of which were listed on the label, and that their presence may pose a risk depending on the amount consumed and the age and body weight of the person using it. Infant ethanol exposure has been linked to long-term developmental consequences, and higher amounts can increase the risk of respiratory depression. Pacific Health Sciences has not received any reports of health impacts from the lot. Parents and caregivers should stop use of the product from the recalled lot and either discard it or return it for a refund.
