The Henry County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with a public hearing at 6 p.m. on a proposed $5.16 million appropriation for the Beaver Creek Drive extension at Patriot Centre. The appropriation would fund about 5,122 feet of road construction to extend Beaver Creek Drive and provide industrial access to lots 10 through 14, according to the meeting packet. The county says the extension is intended to improve traffic flow and safety at the industrial park and open access to property for future development.
The appropriation sheet lists four funding sources: $850,000 in state grants, $1.5 million from the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission, $2.15 million in federal Congressional Direct Spending and $664,497 from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Because the proposed appropriation exceeds 1 percent of the county's fiscal 2026-27 budget, state law requires a public hearing, and county staff recommends approval after the hearing.
The board is also scheduled to consider three other additional appropriations. One would direct $584,034 in state Aid to Localities funds toward a new fire truck for the Bassett Fire Department, with a vendor not yet selected. Another would accept a $40,643 Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles grant for Sheriff's Office traffic enforcement and occupant safety work, covering overtime, community engagement, a LIDAR unit and training, and requiring a $20,322 local match the Sheriff's Office says it would provide in kind. The third is $3,437.94 from the Virginia State Police Help Eliminate Auto Theft program for digital-forensics equipment. Other agenda items include the treasurer's monthly report on delinquent tax collection, General Assembly resolutions honoring former county employees Scott Grindstaff, Joe Bryant, Jennifer Ashworth and Joel Cannaday, and updates from the Martinsville-Henry County YMCA and Piedmont Adult Recovery Court. The evening portion includes highway matters with VDOT Residency Administrator Robin Keeler, plus speakers Van Drewery on concerns in the Carver community tied to a nearby sawmill's reopening and Barry Moxley on a utility-scale solar farm near his home.
