Campaign signs line polling places across southwest Virginia ahead of the midterm elections, and in Lynchburg early voting has jumped by about 2,000 compared with last November, when the city topped 7,000 early voters. Early voting continues through Saturday, Oct. 31, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Lynchburg Registrar Trish Jones says it takes 120 to 150 election officers to run the city's 18 precincts. She has enough volunteers for this election, but other localities are not as fortunate, and registrars' offices recruit year-round to make sure they are staffed when thousands of people show up to vote.

Jones said her office is in the final stretch of dotting the i's and crossing the t's, packing last-minute paperwork and making sure all the little details are handled. She encouraged residents to be part of the process and the transparency of how elections work, saying it helps remove some of the negativity surrounding elections and how they are run.
