Mount Airy will host the 18th annual Mayberry Half Marathon, 10K and 5K on Saturday, Nov. 7, with races starting in historic downtown and heading onto the Granite City Greenway. The half marathon begins at 8 a.m., the 10K at 8:15 a.m. and the 5K at 8:20 a.m.
Peter Raymer, director of Mount Airy Parks and Recreation, said the event follows August flooding that damaged the greenway, and that restoration work means runners can expect essentially the same course. Parts of the greenway had been closed for flood recovery, and Raymer said the entire course as everyone has known and loved, except for a bypass here and there, will be the same fast and flat route. In recent years the race has drawn upwards of 1,000 runners from 18 states and multiple countries.
The race leans heavily into the city's Mayberry identity, with a squad car leading runners downtown for each race, character look-alikes on hand for photos and the winners' podium set up in front of a Mayberry squad car. Registration remains open, and race-day details, including packet pickup and a shuttle between the start and the finish at Riverside Park, are posted on the event site.
