The National Weather Service in Blacksburg issued a dense fog advisory early Thursday for Rockingham and Caswell counties, with the alert in effect until 9 a.m.
The advisory warned drivers to expect reduced visibility during the morning commute. Forecasters advise slowing down and allowing extra time to reach a destination, using low-beam headlights so taillights activate and fog lights if the vehicle has them, and avoiding high beams, which create glare that makes visibility worse.
Officials also recommend keeping a generous following distance, using lane markings to stay in the correct lane, and, in near-zero visibility, turning on hazard lights and pulling into a safe spot such as a business parking lot. If no lot or driveway is available, drivers should pull as far off the road as possible, set the emergency brake and turn off all lights except hazard flashers.
