Stuart Town Council discussed a drought response plan as the South Mayo River runs at record low flows, urging residents and businesses to voluntarily cut outdoor water use and weighing mandatory limits if conditions worsen.
A public hearing on a water conservation ordinance is scheduled for Nov. 18, giving residents a chance to weigh in before any mandatory restrictions are adopted. Town officials said voluntary reductions now could help avoid stricter measures later.
The drought discussion came alongside updates on town projects. Martinsville, Henry County and Patrick County have remained under a state drought emergency advisory, and the region has run roughly 8 inches below normal precipitation over the first nine months of the year.
