Henry County supervisors recognized October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at their meeting last week, honoring the Southside Survivor Response Center's work supporting people affected by domestic violence and encouraging residents to raise awareness, support survivors and help promote safe homes and communities.

SSRC provides emergency shelter, safety planning, legal and medical advocacy, transportation and other support. The Martinsville-based organization serves the region including Henry County and operates a 24-hour crisis helpline at 1-877-934-3576.

Del. Eric Phillips presented Virginia House of Delegates resolutions recognizing four former county public servants. Jennifer Ashworth retired in 2025 after 37 years in the Henry County Circuit Court Clerk's Office and became clerk in 2016; the resolution credited her with digitizing land records dating to 1777, converting court files to electronic formats and improving jury management. Joe Bennett represented the Collinsville District on the Board of Supervisors from 2009 until his term ended in December 2025, serving multiple terms as vice chair and supporting economic development, housing and infrastructure projects. Joel Cannaday devoted more than 25 years to county elections as an election worker, precinct chief and chair of the Henry County Electoral Board. Scott Grindstaff retired Feb. 1 after more than 24 years as county treasurer, expanding online and telephone payment options and maintaining tax-collection rates of about 95 percent for real estate and personal property taxes, and the current treasurer accepted the resolution on his behalf.
