More than 16,000 Surry County voters took advantage of early voting, which ended Saturday at the county's four sites, and Elections Director Sydney Bedsaul Romine said the county is right at 37 percent turnout between early voting and absentee by mail, based on more than 48,000 registered voters.

Figures from the county elections office show 15,602 citizens voted during the 13-day early voting period in Mount Airy, Dobson, Pilot Mountain and Elkin, which began Oct. 15. The Mount Airy site at the Surry County Government Resource Center on State Street led the way with 7,704 ballots, followed by Dobson at 3,763, Elkin at 2,330 and Pilot Mountain at 1,805. A total of 1,092 ballots were cast at the four sites on the final day, and absentee by mail ballots totaled 511 countywide.

Romine compared the numbers with the last comparable general election in 2022, when overall turnout in Surry County was 52.39 percent, and said that could be eclipsed once today's results are added. Polls for Surry's 23 precincts are open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and voters must go to their assigned precinct. All absentee ballots must be received at the county Board of Elections office by 7:30 p.m., unofficial results will be posted online tonight, and the county's canvass meeting is set for Nov. 13.
