Voters in Amherst County and the Town of Pulaski have rejected referendums that could have paved the way for new gaming facilities operated by Churchill Downs Incorporated, the company behind Rosie’s Gaming Emporium.
The measures asked voters whether pari-mutuel wagering should be permitted at satellite facilities in their respective localities. Both proposals were rejected in Tuesday’s November 3 election.
In Amherst County, the vote was particularly close, with 7,057 voting against the measure and 6,874 voting in favor — a difference of just 183 votes.
In the Town of Pulaski, the referendum was rejected by a wider margin, with 1,463 votes against and 1,128 in favor.
A yes vote would have cleared an important local hurdle for Churchill Downs to pursue gaming facilities in those communities. It would not, however, have automatically approved construction or guaranteed that a Rosie’s location would open.
