Republican Billy Parker won the three-way race for Rockingham County sheriff, succeeding longtime Sheriff Sam Page after his 28-year tenure.
Parker, who was sworn in as interim sheriff on Aug. 3, faced Democrat Franklin Moore and unaffiliated candidate Ryan Young. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran, a retired captain with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office and spent more than a decade in the district attorney's office, and he had the endorsement of retired Sheriff Page.
Moore brought more than 30 years in law enforcement, including service as a Rockingham County deputy and police officer in Stoneville, Mayodan and Madison, and 16 years as Stoneville's police chief. Young, a former Graham police officer who launched a nonprofit fighting human trafficking, qualified for the ballot through a petition that exceeded the roughly 3,000-signature threshold for unaffiliated sheriff candidates. Unofficial totals were still being finalized Wednesday.
