Republican Sam Page defeated Democrat Steve Luking in the District 26 state Senate race, after Page unseated longtime Senate leader Phil Berger in the primary.
Page, the former Rockingham County sheriff, led Luking by 3,315 votes in early results reported by Guilford County voting officials Tuesday night, and Luking lost by several thousand votes as the count continued. District 26 includes all of Rockingham County and parts of Guilford County. Luking, a retired doctor who spent 40 years as a family physician and was chief of staff at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville, said the campaign elevated key issues.
At his watch party in Summerfield, Luking told supporters it had been an incredible year and said public schools being dead last in the nation in funding is nothing short of pathetic, adding that the other side is now talking positively about it. He also said both candidates ran a good race, that people are understanding the need for leaders in Raleigh who are responsive to the needs of rural communities, and he congratulated Page on the win.
