A shift in the nation's balance of power is on the way following Tuesday's midterm election, but along Route 220 in Franklin County the political climate remains unchanged inside Trump Town USA in Boones Mill.
The converted church stands as both a living shrine and a lightning rod, where political devotion is packaged, sold and shared. In the wake of Democratic victories nationwide, the outside political shift felt to some inside those walls like a natural disaster. Joanne Roberts drove an hour to Boones Mill on Wednesday morning seeking solace inside the sea of red, shopping for gifts for her grandchildren while looking for community. She said she has been a Christian all her life but was a little mad at God that morning, saying she had been praying hard for the eyes of the American people to be opened. Her friend Debra Nunn came looking for solidarity alongside stocking stuffers, and both said they believe high living costs drove voters toward Democrats.
Owner Donald Whitey Taylor admitted the post-election morning was tough, saying he felt like he had a hangover. But he says Trump Town is not closing up shop; instead the store is adapting to the next chapter, with veto merchandise hitting the shelves starting Thursday.
