Mohawk Industries closed the Karastan rug mill in Eden in 2021, ending wool rug production at the Leaksville plant where the first Karastan rug was made in 1928.
The Museum and Archives of Rockingham County marks 1928 as the year the first Karastan rug came off a loom in Leaksville. Mohawk, which bought the Karastan business in 1993, closed the Eden production facilities in 2021, ended wool rug production there and moved its synthetic rug production to Georgia.
