Roanoke-area residents looking for an outdoor activity or a low-key community outing have several options on the parks calendar for the second half of August.
Saturday, Aug. 15: Roanoke Parks and Recreation's Apple Orchard Falls hike runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is listed at $17. The fee includes transportation and leadership for the department's summer waterfall-hike series.
Sunday, Aug. 16: The city lists the deadline to register for adult fall softball. A family-friendly League Social is also scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. at Wasena Park for current and prospective players.
Monday, Aug. 24: Sunset Kayaking at Carvins Cove Boat Landing is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Equipment and leadership are provided; the listing says participants must be able to swim, and a parent or guardian must attend with anyone under 18. The fee is $35.
Wednesday, Aug. 26: The next waterfall option is Cascade Falls, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., also listed at $17. On Friday, Aug. 28, the Fishburn Mansion History Tour runs noon to 1 p.m. for $5.
Because outdoor programs can change with weather, capacity or trail conditions, residents should check the registration pages before leaving home. Roanoke County's Explore Park also lists Twilight Zipline dates beginning Aug. 22, with online registration limited by time slot.
