Breaking weather alert: The National Weather Service in Blacksburg issued a Flash Flood Warning at 6:13 a.m. EDT Sunday, October 11, for Franklin County, southeastern Roanoke County, Roanoke and Salem. The warning remains in effect until 11:15 a.m.
Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly after 1.5 to 3 inches of rain. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour were expected, with another 0.5 to 1 inch possible. The warning includes Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Rocky Mount, Boones Mill, Ferrum and Penhook.
Flash flooding may affect small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other low-lying or poor-drainage areas. Do not drive onto flooded roads.
Martinsville and northern Piedmont advisory: Minor flooding and rapid river rises are occurring or expected through 9 a.m. across western Rockingham, Stokes and southeastern Surry counties in North Carolina and Henry, Patrick and southern Franklin counties plus Martinsville in Virginia. The advisory includes Eden, Martinsville, Rocky Mount, Wentworth, Mayodan, Madison and Pilot Mountain.
Forsyth County advisory: Minor flooding remains possible through 8 a.m. around Winston-Salem, Kernersville, Clemmons, Lewisville, Walkertown, Rural Hall, Pfafftown and nearby communities.
