Roanoke has two route-impact items for drivers to keep on the calendar this week and next, with one emergency repair already affecting 24th Street NW and another planned closure set for the Garden City corridor.
The city says Shaffer's Crossing on 24th Street NW, between Johnson Avenue NW and Salem Avenue SW, closed Friday, June 5, after an oversized truck struck and damaged the structure. The crossing reopened temporarily for the weekend of June 6-7, then closed again Monday, June 8, when weekday repair work resumed. Roanoke says the crossing will remain closed through Friday, June 12, while crews complete repairs.
A second closure begins Monday, June 15, when the Garden City Boulevard and Riverland Road intersection closes through July 5, 2026. The city says that closure is needed to install a new drainage system for the Riverland Road and Star Trail Parking Area Improvement Project. The posted detour is via Yellow Mountain Road.
- What to know: Shaffer's Crossing is the immediate weekday closure; Garden City and Riverland is the longer upcoming detour.
- Who is affected: Northwest Roanoke commuters, Salem Avenue area drivers, Garden City corridor traffic, cyclists and pedestrians near work zones.
- Driver action: Allow extra travel time, use posted detours, and watch for crews and temporary controls.
Roanoke also posted June 9 crosswalk-marking work at Orange Avenue NW and Gainsboro Road, which means drivers should check the city's traffic notices before assuming a usual route is clear.
Sources: Reporting based on City of Roanoke News Flash traffic updates, including Shaffer's Crossing and Orange Avenue notices, and Garden City Boulevard and Riverland Road closure, checked June 9, 2026.
