Roanoke County drivers using Route 220 near Sontag Road and Cassell Drive are navigating a new intersection pattern while construction crews continue safety work.
Virginia Department of Transportation officials said the change took effect after 7 p.m. July 20. Drivers who previously crossed Route 220 straight through the intersection must now turn onto the highway and use the next available median crossover or traffic signal to reverse direction.
Sontag Road and Cassell Drive remain reachable through the existing turn lanes. VDOT says barrels and message boards will guide traffic while crews finish the work, and nighttime lane closures or flagging operations may occur between about 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. The current schedule calls for the work to be completed by July 31, weather permitting.
Motorists should slow down, follow the temporary signs and allow extra time for the changed movements, especially during evening work hours. Drivers can check VDOT’s Salem District updates and 511 Virginia for changes to the schedule or traffic control.
