Families and nature fans can explore a different side of the neighborhood at Roanoke Parks and Recreation's Bug & Bat Night at Wasena Park on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The evening program runs from 8 to 10 p.m. and focuses on the activity that begins after sunset. The city's listing says participants will use UV lights to attract nocturnal insects that are hard to see during the day and sensitive microphones to isolate and amplify bat echolocation.
The program is designed as a hands-on neighborhood nature exploration rather than a formal lecture. The city lists the cost at $5 to $25; families should check the current registration page for the applicable fee and availability before heading out.
Bring a curiosity about the small wildlife living around Roanoke's parks and backyards, and plan for an evening outdoors. The event is one of several Bug & Bat Nights scheduled by Roanoke Parks and Recreation this summer.
