Ground was broken on September 23, 2024, for a monument in Rocky Mount honoring 70 Black Union soldiers from Franklin County.
The Raising the Shade project, funded by a 285,000 dollar Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia grant from the Mellon Foundation, was unveiled at First Baptist Church in January 2026.
