John Craghead House near Moneta listed on National Register
2022
Moneta
The circa 1825 brick farmhouse, one of the few antebellum brick buildings left around Smith Mountain Lake, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 24, 2022.
The house is the main surviving building of the John Craghead plantation in the Moneta area, on land granted in 1794. The Virginia Landmarks Register listed it on December 9, 2021, before the National Register listing. The lake formed behind the Smith Mountain dam, completed in 1963, now covers much of the plantation's historic setting, and the house was carved out of 1990s lakeside development and kept on a 0.812-acre lot.
