Martinsville, Va. – George W. Lester, II, a prominent business figure in Martinsville, has pledged a significant $2.5 million towards the construction of a new YMCA facility near Uptown Martinsville.
At 85 years old, Lester serves as the chairman of The Lester Group, a diversified enterprise involved in building materials, real estate, and manufacturing across multiple states. He stepped down as CEO in 2018.
In a statement, Lester expressed his commitment to the community, saying, “The Lester family has been a contributing member of the Martinsville-Henry County community, and it’s my privilege to make this gift honoring the legacy of our family’s community service.” In recognition of his generous donation, the new facility will be named The Lester Family YMCA.
Brad Kinkema, CEO of the Martinsville-Henry County Family YMCA, expressed gratitude for Lester's contribution, stating, “We’re hopeful Mr. Lester’s commitment will encourage additional donations during the leadership phase of the fundraising campaign for the Y.”
This donation marks a significant step towards enhancing community resources in Martinsville.
