In a notable election in Boones Mill, Donald "Whitey" Taylor Jr. faced off against incumbent Mayor Victor Conner on Tuesday, but the results were overwhelmingly in favor of Conner. The election took place at the Boones Mill Elementary School precinct, where Conner secured 108 votes (87% of the 124 total), while Taylor received just 15 votes, with one write-in candidate completing the tally.
The election backdrop featured Taylor's campaign prominently displayed around town, with slogans like "Make Boonesmill great again" adorning his signs. Taylor, who is also the proprietor of a merchandise store named Trump Town USA, located in a historic church building on Bethlehem Road, has made headlines recently due to legal troubles. He was arrested on October 22 on multiple charges, including assault and indecent exposure, and is scheduled for a court hearing on November 13.
When questioned about how his legal issues might impact his candidacy, Taylor dismissed the concerns, labeling the accusations as "fake news" and "election interference." He stated, "It’s all for money. I’ll take care of it."
Despite the challenges, Taylor still garnered some support within the community. A few residents expressed their willingness to vote for him, although they chose to remain anonymous. Taylor is known in the area as a promoter and owner of the Franklin County Speedway, and his presence in local affairs has been significant.
As the dust settles from the election, Conner's decisive victory reflects the community's current political climate and the impact of Taylor's recent controversies on his campaign.
