The City of Danville has announced an exciting new project: the development of a Whitewater Channel at 424 Memorial Drive. This innovative channel is designed by Scott Shipley, an Olympic kayaker and expert in whitewater engineering.
According to Danville Parks and Recreation, this project will revitalize the historic canal and transform it into a top-notch outdoor recreation area. It aims to attract visitors and provide a fun space for both residents and tourists.
The Whitewater Channel will include adjustable whitewater features suitable for everyone, from beginners to Olympic-level athletes. It will also have public access points, areas for spectators, and links to the Riverwalk trail, making it accessible for all.
On Tuesday, the Danville City Council held a first reading for a budget appropriation ordinance. They are seeking a $2 million grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, through the Industrial Revitalization Fund, to help fund the project. The city needs to contribute an additional $4 million to qualify for this grant.
The Whitewater Channel is set to open in 2027, promising to be a fantastic addition to Danville's outdoor activities.
