Danville awarded $500,000 EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant

Danville has received a $500,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help identify redevelopment opportunities and advance revitalization work in key parts of the city.

The city says the grant will support environmental assessment activities in historic districts, with a focus on the North Main Street Business District and the Mechanicsville Historic District. The work is intended to give property owners and prospective developers better information about sites where past industrial, commercial or other uses may complicate reuse.

Danville described the award as part of a nationwide EPA investment totaling $248 million for 190 communities. The city also said the new funding builds on earlier assessment and remediation work that has helped move underused properties toward productive community use.

For residents and businesses, the assessment phase is an early step rather than a construction announcement. It can help clarify environmental conditions, reduce uncertainty around older properties and support future investment decisions in the two targeted districts.
