A detention officer with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office was attacked on Oct. 16, and the office says she was transported for treatment and is expected to recover. The inmate, 26-year-old Abrielle Simone Cherry, was quickly detained by Rockingham County Sheriff's Office detention facility personnel following the attack.

Cherry has been charged with felony assault inflicting physical injury on a detention employee. She was taken before the magistrate and was issued a no bond order, and she remains incarcerated. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Sheriff Billy Parker expressed his gratitude to Sgt. Muncy and Sgt. Odell for their quick response to their fellow officer during the incident. The sheriff said any assault in the detention facility against officers is never taken lightly, that he is thankful the detention officer, a 14-year veteran, is going to be okay, and that he wishes her a speedy recovery.
