A Rockingham County deputy's quick response to a report of an erratic driver led to a lifesaving intervention on the side of the road.
Deputy D. Webb, with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office patrol division, responded to a call about a vehicle driving erratically in the area of NC 14 and U.S. 29 Business on Nov. 3. When Webb arrived, the vehicle was on the side of the road and the driver appeared to be suffering from a medical episode. After attempts to get the driver's attention, Webb forcefully entered the vehicle. EMS arrived and assessed the driver, and Narcan was immediately administered, and the driver regained consciousness.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol also responded and is investigating the driver on suspicion of DUI. Sheriff Billy Parker commended Webb for his quick actions and lifesaving training. The sheriff's office said all Rockingham County deputies are equipped with Narcan, which it described as a vital tool in reversing opioid overdoses, and that it will continue providing the medication.
