Attorney General Quietly Visits Martinsville — Because Apparently the City’s Legal Drama Needed a Guest Appearance
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Martinsville has apparently attracted the attention of Virginia’s top law enforcement official — and he didn't exactly arrive with a marching band.
Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones recently made a quiet visit to Martinsville, according to a report by the Martinsville Bulletin.
The visit included time with local law enforcement officials and tours of several locations around the city.
And naturally, that raises one very simple question:
Why Martinsville?
The city has been dealing with plenty of legal and political questions in recent months, including an ongoing investigation being handled by a special prosecutor. That prosecutor recently described the investigation as “trudging along,” with interviews continuing to uncover additional details.
Now the Attorney General has quietly shown up.
Coincidence?
Maybe.
Just a friendly visit?
Could be.
Or perhaps Martinsville has become interesting enough that Richmond wants to see what exactly is going on down here.
No announcement was made indicating that Jones' visit was connected to the city's ongoing legal troubles, and there is no indication that the Attorney General's Office is taking over or conducting an investigation into Martinsville.
Still, when the state's top lawyer quietly comes to town while the city is already dealing with legal questions, people are naturally going to start asking questions.
And Martinsville has never exactly been short on those lately.
For now, officials aren't saying much.
Which, considering the amount of legal drama surrounding the city, is probably the most Martinsville thing possible.
The special prosecutor is “trudging along.” The Attorney General is quietly visiting.
At this point, all Martinsville needs is someone to bring the popcorn.
