BARBOURSVILLE, Va. — What began as a report of a man threatening to burn down a home with gasoline quickly escalated into a violent series of assaults that ended with multiple felony charges and the suspect being held without bond.
According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a violent assault in progress in the Barboursville area.
While en route to the initial call involving threats to burn a residence, deputies received additional information indicating that two separate assaults had occurred during the incident.
Deputies located two victims at different locations. One victim suffered minor injuries, while the second sustained serious injuries.
Corporal Christian Amos, Deputy Jayden Joseph, and Deputy Nicholas Benner quickly located and arrested Kenneth Wayne Whorton Jr., 33, of Barboursville, without further incident.
Following the investigation, Whorton was charged with:
Felony Malicious Wounding
Felony Child Endangerment
Felony Threats to Bomb or Burn
Assault and Battery
Assault and Battery Against a Family Member
Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor
Disorderly Conduct
Authorities said Whorton continued causing problems after his arrest. While appearing before a magistrate, he reportedly became unruly and was ordered held without bond on all charges.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office praised the actions of Corporal Amos, Deputy Joseph, and Deputy Benner for their quick response and professionalism in safely bringing the dangerous situation under control.
The investigation remains ongoing.
