Mount Airy's soccer team captured its ninth conference championship in 10 seasons with an Oct. 26 win over East Surry, a 7-1 result that secured the Northwest 3A/4A Conference title outright. It is the program's first conference title outside the 1A classification.
Coach Cody Atkins said he was on cloud nine and happy the players earned a championship considering the injuries, cards and missing players the team dealt with all year. The Granite Bears finished 8-2 in the league, marking their first conference championship season with multiple losses. They lost both meetings with West Stokes but got help when North Surry tied West Stokes on Oct. 21, and West Stokes then beat Surry Central 2-1 in the final conference match to give Mount Airy the title outright.
Mount Airy finished 19-4 overall, ahead of West Stokes at 7-2-1 in league play, Surry Central at 7-3, Forbush at 5-5, North Surry at 1-7-2 and East Surry at 0-9-1. The Granite Bears have one nonconference match remaining Oct. 28, hosting Triad Math and Science Academy.
