Northern Regional Hospital is now part of Novant Health. The Mount Airy hospital, now known as Novant Health Northern Regional Medical Center, officially joined the system Nov. 2, and the hospital held a welcoming ceremony Monday morning for leaders and staff.

The hospital opened in 1957 and has grown into a 133-bed medical center offering advanced imaging, laboratory, cardiology, maternity, orthopedic, surgical, skilled nursing and emergency services, with about 1,000 team members across inpatient and outpatient locations. Former president and CEO Robin Hodgin, who led the hospital through the transition, spoke at the ceremony and has retired following it. Commissioner Bill Goins called the partnership a win-win for Surry County and its communities, and Alisha Hutchens, senior vice president and president of Novant Health's Triad Region, said the system wants to listen, learn and invest in ways that strengthen care for generations.

Patients can continue to receive care from the same physicians and clinics, with no changes planned to services currently available, and Novant is developing plans to expand services at the hospital and across the community. The county's asset purchase agreement requires Novant to make a $130 million investment over the 10 years after closing, calls for an additional $100 million for workforce enhancement, requires a local leadership team for at least five years and commits to current core services for at least a decade while retaining more than 1,000 positions. The deal is Novant's second rural hospital acquisition in northwest North Carolina in five months, following Community Hospital of Stokes in June.
