Surry Communications is marking its 75th anniversary this year and has achieved 100 percent fiber-optic coverage for its traditional service areas, CEO Richie Parker told the Surry County Board of Commissioners during Monday's meeting. Parker said the organization has remained committed to serving the local community since its inception in 1951, describing the company as a Surry County success story.
Parker said the company is investing in Surry County by connecting residents to fiber and noted its partnership with the national NTCA Smart Rural Community initiative, which Surry Communications was one of the first organizations to adopt back in 2016. He said fiber investment increases value to residents and connected homes and provides greater access to services such as remote work, online learning, smart home technology, entertainment and telehealth appointments.
The presentation covered partnerships and services with local organizations, including a program that equips downtown areas with a localized WiFi connection, better technology to service local first responders, and expansion plans, along with a map detailing the company's fiber network reach, areas where it is accepting fiber applications and current construction areas. Parker also showcased an award recently given to the company by NTCA, one of only eight organizations across the United States to receive the distinction. Surry Communications celebrated its customer appreciation day, which also marked the 75th anniversary, Thursday afternoon in Dobson. Commissioners also heard discussion related to Flock camera usage, a lengthy update from the Department of Social Services and September's end-of-month finance report.
