The Danbury Water Fund and Stokes County Public Works are asking all customers to begin voluntarily reducing water use, starting Oct. 30, because the well stations have been pumping long hours.

Assistant County Manager Bryan Miller said the wells are not producing at the rate the system needs because of the prolonged drought and because of maintenance and repair work tied to the water main replacement project. Contractors have broken pipes at times, and extra pressure has caused blowouts, so the system has lost a lot of water while the drought continues.

Stage 1 is the first level of water conservation, and reductions are voluntary with no penalties for non-compliance. Customers are asked to take shorter showers, turn off the faucet while brushing teeth or washing dishes, fix leaking fixtures, wash only full loads, avoid watering grass and gardens, wash vehicles less often and avoid unnecessary water use. The reductions begin Oct. 30 and remain in effect until further notice, and questions can go to the Danbury Water Fund and Public Works office at 336-593-2415.
