Tuesday's Tuesdays of Honor comes from a family that wants to recognize their father, Silas Franklin Plybon of Rocky Mount, Virginia, who was drafted into the U.S. Army at age 18 during World War II.
Plybon was a member of the mortar squad, assigned to the 35th Infantry Division, 134th Regiment, Company K, and served on the front lines in the battles at Rhineland and Central Europe. His life was spared while fighting in Germany: he shared that his company was in an open field when the fighting began, and he remembered the pull of bullets zooming by his face. He jumped into a trench, and an artillery shell landed beside him, but it did not explode.
Plybon married Frances Ferguson in 1945, and the couple was married for 75 years. They had five children, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. WDBJ7 invites families to submit photos and information about veterans for the weekly Tuesdays of Honor segment by emailing mgaona@wdbj7.com.
