Unscientific, Unofficial and Apparently Unstoppable: Unhoused Adam Willard Leads the Pack for Martinsville City Council
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Forget the pollsters. Forget the fancy surveys. And definitely don't call this scientific.
But if you ask the people around Martinsville who appears to be getting the most attention heading into November's City Council election, Adam Willard is making a strong showing.
Willard, who is unhoused, has emerged as one of the more talked-about candidates in the race for Martinsville City Council.
There is, of course, no scientific polling behind that statement. No professional survey was conducted, no margin of error was calculated and no campaign has commissioned a fancy political analytics firm.
This is strictly the “what are people talking about?” test.
And by that completely unscientific measure, Willard appears to be leading the pack.
His campaign has generated attention around issues including homelessness, housing, city services and what he believes Martinsville should be doing differently for residents who are struggling.
The November election is still ahead, and plenty can change between now and Election Day. Other candidates have their own supporters, organizations and campaign strategies — and voter turnout will ultimately determine who gets the seats.
But for now, if the unofficial Martinsville political water cooler had a scoreboard, Willard's name would be sitting pretty high on it.
To be clear: this isn't a poll.
It's an observation.
It's unscientific.
It's not peer-reviewed.
And your uncle arguing about City Council on Facebook does not count as a statistically valid sample.
But heading into November, Adam Willard certainly appears to have people's attention.
