WPPDC Seeks Public Input on Rural Transportation Plan Across West Piedmont Region

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Residents across the West Piedmont region have an opportunity to help shape the future of local transportation as the West Piedmont Planning District Commission (WPPDC) updates its Rural Long-Range Transportation Plan.

The commission launched a public survey on October 28, 2026, seeking input from residents, workers and other stakeholders about transportation problems, safety concerns and potential improvements throughout the region's rural communities.

The survey is open through December 30, 2026.

The Rural Long-Range Transportation Plan examines existing transportation conditions, emerging trends and challenges while identifying potential solutions to improve safety, mobility and the overall functionality of the region's transportation network.

Recommendations may address roads and highways, as well as other transportation options, including bicycling, walking and transit services where applicable.

“The Rural Long-Range Transportation Plan will help make our region’s roads safer and more user-friendly, while putting forth recommendations for travel modes for all users of the system, including those who do not or cannot drive, and moving our region forward,” said Joe Bonanno, WPPDC senior planner.

Residents Can Identify Problem Areas

The public survey includes an interactive mapping tool that allows participants to pinpoint specific locations where transportation improvements may be needed and suggest possible solutions.

Residents can use the survey to highlight concerns such as road safety, traffic conditions, accessibility and other transportation issues affecting their communities.

The plan covers the predominantly rural areas served by the WPPDC, excluding the Danville Metropolitan Planning Organization area, which includes the City of Danville and adjacent portions of Pittsylvania County.

The WPPDC serves Franklin, Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania counties, along with the cities of Danville and Martinsville.

Officials are encouraging residents to participate so local concerns and priorities can help guide future transportation recommendations and planning decisions.

The survey closes December 30, 2026.
