— A license check in Rockingham County turned into a drug arrest after deputies say they discovered illegal narcotics inside a vehicle driven by a 51-year-old Virginia man.

According to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office, deputies were conducting a license check in the Anglin Mill Road area of Stoneville on October 15, 2026, when they encountered Michael Richards of Bassett, Virginia.

Corporal A. Vaughn, Corporal M. Michaels and Deputy A. Peters were involved in the investigation.

Authorities said the encounter led to the discovery of illegal narcotics, resulting in Richards' arrest.

Richards faces three charges:

Felony possession of methamphetamine

Misdemeanor possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce

Misdemeanor simple possession of a Schedule II controlled substance

Richards appeared before a magistrate and was issued a $150,000 secured bond.

His next court date is scheduled for October 26, 2026.

Sheriff Billy Parker praised the deputies involved, saying the agency remains committed to combating illegal drug activity throughout Rockingham County.

The charges are allegations, and Richards is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
