MELD PrintWorks is building a new facility in Montgomery County, a move the company says is critical to its growth and will bring new jobs to the area. MELD already employs about 50 people in the county, and CEO Nanci Hardwick said the company is still finalizing projections for how many positions the expansion will create.
The new building will be nearly 12,000 square feet and will house larger 3D metal printers. Hardwick said the machines use a printing process invented in Christiansburg by MELD Manufacturing, which prints metal in a solid-state process. The parts produced supply major aerospace and defense companies worldwide, including large metal forging replacements used on aircraft, in heavy equipment and on ships.
We do plan to move into the building next year, and we are still finalizing our projections for growth in terms of labor, Hardwick said, adding that hiring plans should be finalized by the end of the year. Montgomery County's Economic Development Authority approved a grant of up to $150,000 to support the project. Economic Development Director Brian Hamilton said the funding works as a rebate, with the county returning taxes paid over a series of years for infrastructure development.
