Well, folks, something appears to be missing from Uptown Martinsville — and it might just be the Martinsville Bulletin!

The newspaper's longtime location at 19 East Church Street appears to have gone strangely quiet.

The doors are locked, an August newspaper is reportedly still sitting in the rack, and the building itself looks like it might be auditioning for a role in the next haunted house movie.

And here's the kicker — it's October!

You would think a newspaper would be pretty good at keeping things current. Apparently, the newspaper rack didn't get the memo.

So what happened?

Did the Martinsville Bulletin pack up and move on without much fanfare? Has the newspaper found a new home? Or did someone simply forget to tell the building that the party was over?

And then there's the condition of the property.

Let's just say the building isn't exactly winning any beauty contests these days. Its weathered exterior could certainly use some attention, especially in a downtown area where so much effort has gone into revitalization and improving appearances.

Which brings us to an interesting question:

Did the Bulletin leave because of the building's condition and the potential cost of repairs? Or was something else behind the apparent departure?

We don't know. And to be fair, there's no confirmed evidence that maintenance problems had anything to do with a possible move.

But the question is worth asking.

After all, it's a little ironic when a business that's spent years reporting on what's happening around Martinsville leaves behind a building that may now be newsworthy itself.

Meanwhile, Uptown Martinsville continues working to attract businesses, improve its appearance, and bring life back to older downtown properties.

A building that looks more prepared for trick-or-treaters than customers probably isn't the image city leaders are hoping to promote.

Of course, an old newspaper in a rack doesn't prove a business has officially moved out. And locked doors alone don't tell the whole story.

But taken together, the scene certainly raises some eyebrows.

So where exactly is the Martinsville Bulletin operating these days? What's next for the East Church Street property? And who's going to give that poor old building some attention?

Those are questions we'd welcome the Bulletin or property owner answering.

In the meantime, the doors are locked, August is apparently still making headlines, and the building looks ready for Halloween.

For a newspaper business, that's quite a story.
