Flood Watch covers much of the Star News corridor until evening

A Flood Watch remains in effect across much of the Star News coverage corridor as slow-moving showers and embedded thunderstorms could produce high rainfall rates through Monday evening.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg issued the watch Monday morning, July 13, for portions of Virginia and North Carolina, including Henry, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Franklin and Roanoke counties in Virginia and Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Caswell and nearby counties in North Carolina. The watch runs through this evening.

Forecasters said excessive runoff could flood creeks, streams, rivers, low-lying areas, poor-drainage spots and urban locations. Drivers should not attempt to cross water-covered roads, and residents in flood-prone areas should be ready to act if a warning is issued.

  • What to know: The watch is not a confirmed flood report, but it means conditions could support flooding if heavy rain develops over the same places.
  • Who is affected: Commuters, school and camp travel, delivery routes, low-water crossings, flood-prone neighborhoods and outdoor events from the Martinsville-Danville area toward the Roanoke and northern Triad corridors.
  • Why it matters: Local flooding can develop quickly during summer downpours, especially where drains are already overwhelmed or creeks rise out of their banks.

Residents should monitor updated forecasts, keep phones charged, move vehicles away from flood-prone low spots when possible and follow any later Flood Warning or local emergency management guidance.
