Asheville police say officers fatally shot an armed intruder during an overnight break-in call after the man refused orders to drop a knife.

The Asheville Police Department says it responded around 12:30 a.m. to a residence on Nancy Street after multiple reports of a break-in in progress, with callers hearing yelling and reporting a man inside the home. Officers saw signs of forced entry and, once inside, encountered a man armed with a knife. After the suspect refused multiple commands to drop the weapon, authorities say officers opened fire. Medical aid was provided until paramedics arrived, but the man died after being taken to Mission Hospital. His identity has not been released.

No officers were injured. Per the department's protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the shooting.
