Martinsville secures $16.6 million for wastewater plant repairs

Martinsville has secured a $16.672 million state financing package to repair and renovate the city’s wastewater treatment plant, according to a July 15 city announcement.

The award comes through the Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund Program. The package includes $9,169,600 in direct principal forgiveness authorized by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The remaining portion will carry a 0.5% interest rate, according to the city.

Martinsville says the funding will fully cover the wastewater facility project. The city described the work as necessary for environmental and utility-safety improvements and said the low-cost financing will reduce the long-term financial impact on local taxpayers.

The project will be managed with the Virginia Resources Authority and the DEQ Blue Ridge Regional Office. The next useful public checkpoints will be construction schedules, procurement notices and any service or access advisories issued as work moves forward.
