Drivers using Shadwell Drive in Roanoke County should allow extra time while the railroad crossing between Hollins Road and Sanderson Drive is closed for maintenance.
Roanoke County posted the notice July 27 and said the closure would begin Tuesday, July 28, for up to three days. That means the crossing may remain closed through Thursday, July 30, unless the work is completed sooner.
For eastbound travel, the county’s detour runs from Shadwell Drive to a right turn on Hollins Road, a left on Beaumont Road and then Old Mountain Road. Westbound drivers should use Old Mountain Road to Beaumont Road, turn right on Hollins Road and then turn left onto Shadwell Drive.
Drivers should follow signs and allow for changing work conditions around the crossing. The county’s notice does not describe a longer-term road closure beyond the maintenance window.
Source: Reporting based on a Roanoke County notice posted July 27, 2026, Shadwell Drive railroad-crossing closure. The possible Thursday end date is an inference from the county’s stated “up to three days” starting July 28.
