Roanoke closes 24th Street tunnel block through Friday

Roanoke drivers, cyclists and pedestrians should plan around a daytime closure on 24th Street NW this week.

The city says 24th Street NW between Baker Avenue NW and Salem Avenue SW will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, through Friday, June 26, 2026. The work is tied to construction on the 24th Street tunnel.

Roanoke says motorists may see delays near the closure. The city is urging drivers to allow extra travel time, use alternate routes when possible and stay alert for crews and equipment in the work zone.

  • What to know: The closure is daytime only, but it repeats across four weekdays.
  • Who is affected: Northwest Roanoke drivers, Salem Avenue-area commuters, nearby residents, delivery routes, cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Driver action: Build in extra time and check city traffic notices before assuming the tunnel block is open.

This is a fresh update to earlier June route work around the 24th Street/Shaffer's Crossing area. The posted work window now specifically covers June 23-26.
