danvillemuseum.org | Aug 13, 2026 1:42 PM

The Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History will open a new exhibition pairing a Civil War prisoner's sketchbook with a traveling medical-history display on Friday, Aug. 21.

The museum's listing says Henry Van der Weyde, a Civil War Prisoner's Sketchbook will run Aug. 21 through Dec. 27. The exhibit centers on an original sketchbook created while Van der Weyde was imprisoned in Danville as a Union soldier and later donated to the museum.

The museum is also partnering with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine on The Toll of War, a traveling exhibit scheduled for Aug. 21 through Nov. 30. The exhibit examines how soldiers and civilians, including Black and white communities, experienced the effects of the Civil War.

Both displays are listed at the Danville Museum, 975 Main St. The museum's regular public hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. General admission is listed as $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for ages 7-17 and free for children 6 and younger. A members-only reception is listed for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20.
