94-Year-Old Woman’s Death at Virginia Assisted Living Facility Ruled Homicide
An 83-year-old woman is the subject of a homicide investigation following the death of a 94-year-old resident at an assisted living facility in Fishersville, Virginia.
The incident happened at Calveria Living, where both women were residents of the facility’s memory care unit.
According to investigators, the 94-year-old woman suffered a significant head injury after an alleged physical altercation with the other resident. A deputy responding to the facility reportedly saw the two women placing their hands on one another before the 83-year-old woman pushed or chest-bumped the victim.
The victim fell backward and struck the back of her head on the floor.
She remained hospitalized for several weeks and was later discharged to hospice care. She died on July 10.
Two days later, the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that the woman’s death was being investigated as a homicide.
Investigators reviewed surveillance video, which reportedly captured the encounter, and obtained a search warrant for relevant patient records maintained by Calveria Living.
Authorities say those records are being examined to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, document the injuries sustained, evaluate the physical and mental condition of those involved, and identify evidence relevant to the homicide investigation.
No charges have been filed at this time.
Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional details are not being released at this time.
The victim was born in North Wales and had lived in New York, California and Massachusetts before settling in Waynesboro, according to her obituary.
Her family described her as someone who will be remembered for her kindness, loving spirit and compassion for animals.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed.
