A proposed AI data center near Rocky Mount has been dropped following months of community opposition, a Franklin County supervisor says.

Boone District Supervisor Mike Meredith said the county received verification last week that the project, known internally as "Project Flash," would not move forward. The announcement came after more than 100 residents gathered at the Scruggs Volunteer Fire Department to raise concerns about the project's impact on natural resources, electricity and quality of life at Summit View Business Park.

Members of the Franklin County Community Coalition called the news an emotional victory for the community.
