After years of delays, a long-awaited Piggly Wiggly is opening Wednesday in Greensboro at 819 West Florida St., near the intersection of Florida Street and Freeman Mill Road, in an area where residents have lacked easy access to fresh groceries. The store posted that it would open Oct. 21, and a sign on the door described a soft opening, with someone affiliated with ownership saying it would likely open around 7 a.m.

The store was originally supposed to open in 2020, but the pandemic, supply shortages and permitting issues pushed the opening date back several times. Developers at S&S Capital LLC bought the property at Freeman Mill Square more than seven years ago, and in 2020 Greensboro City Council authorized a loan and grant totaling $750,000 to bring fresh food and jobs to the area, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture classifies as a low-access food area.

Residents had said they were looking forward to a place closer to home where they could reliably buy fresh food, noting that the nearest options are Food Lion stores off Merritt Drive and near the Coliseum. The opening is expected to make grocery shopping easier for neighbors who walk or use public transit.
