Artificial intelligence cloud provider Fluidstack disclosed details on its data center project under construction in Wythe County and hosted a public open house Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wytheville Meeting Center on Community Boulevard. The presentation came during the Board of Supervisors meeting Oct. 27 and addressed questions residents have asked most often.
According to the county, the facility will use a closed-loop cooling system requiring an initial fill of approximately 400,000 gallons, with ongoing water consumption primarily supporting employee needs such as restrooms and kitchens. Fluidstack said it will pay for its electricity consumption, necessary infrastructure and upgrades to the nearby electrical substation, and that the facility must comply with Progress Park's existing noise standards. The company said it did not seek or accept project-specific tax incentives and anticipates generating substantial annual tax revenue for Wythe County.
The project is expected to support approximately 1,000 construction workers at peak activity and 75 permanent positions once operational, with the majority of construction completed by the end of 2027 and operations beginning in phases. Board members also raised questions about fire safety, wastewater management, local hiring opportunities and future operations, and the open house was set up in an informal, drop-in format so residents could speak one-on-one with the project team.
